'Horsetails' (the genus Equisetum) are the survivors of a major evolutionary branch of the plant world, quite distinct from other groups such as flowering plants, conifers and ferns. Our present day plants are similar to their ancestors that grew 100 million years before the Dinosaurs. With their unique 'architecture' and almost alien appearance they make fascinating subjects for study and cultivation. On this web site can be found a variety of information about the 15 or so species that still survive around the world.
